Founder's Story

Productive Struggle Institute was not created in a boardroom or marketing meeting. It emerged from four decades of teaching, curriculum design, coaching, leadership, and learning alongside students, educators, professionals, and aspiring leaders.

As a young traveler standing on the island of Lokrum off the coast of Dubrovnik, Croatia, I had an unexpected realization. I wanted a career that would allow me to return to places like this—not just once, but throughout my life. That realization led me to education.

A year later, after completing New York City's rigorous teacher certification process, I began my career teaching in Washington Heights in Upper Manhattan. My first years in the classroom taught me one of the most important lessons of my professional life: all people are capable of growth when expectations remain high and learning environments are challenging, supportive, and meaningful.

Over the next four decades, I taught in New York City and Broward County, Florida, while also serving as an author, curriculum designer, instructional coach, and professional development trainer. My work contributed to seven nationally published English Language Arts textbooks in Perfection Learning's Connections series, where my name still appears in the acknowledgments today.

While helping develop those textbooks, I became increasingly interested in how learning actually happens. Rather than teaching standards as disconnected skills, I believed learners developed deeper understanding when ideas, disciplines, and experiences were connected through meaningful themes and authentic tasks. The instructional frameworks I designed emphasized thematic learning, multiple readings of complex texts, authentic literature, and progressively deeper levels of thinking. The ultimate goal was never simply to understand information, but to apply knowledge, transfer learning to new situations, and solve complex real-world problems.

As educational systems moved toward standards-based accountability, I often found myself challenging assumptions about what students and teachers were capable of achieving. Time and again, I saw people rise to expectations when they were given rigorous instruction, meaningful support, and opportunities to engage in challenging work. Those experiences reinforced a belief that would eventually become the foundation of my professional philosophy: growth does not occur when challenge is removed; growth occurs when challenge is supported.

My work eventually expanded beyond the classroom. As a professional development facilitator and instructional coach, I supported educators, mentored colleagues, and helped schools improve teaching and learning practices. My coaching work earned Broward County's highest innovation designation, reinforcing what years of classroom experience had already taught me: meaningful growth happens when people are challenged, supported, and trusted to think for themselves.

Long before I had a name for it, Productive Struggle had become my life's work.

Whether I was teaching middle school students in New York City, writing curriculum for classrooms across the country, helping high school students prepare for college entrance exams, facilitating professional development, mentoring teachers, training yoga instructors, or coaching emerging leaders, the underlying principle remained the same: meaningful learning requires challenge, reflection, and practice.

Today, Productive Struggle Institute brings that philosophy to learners, teachers, and leaders through educational programs, coaching, professional development, and future publications.

Extreme SAT helps learners understand how assessments think.

Yoga Coach helps teachers grow their instructional practice, observation skills, leadership capacity, and professional confidence.

Leadership and coaching programs help individuals develop people with dignity while building stronger organizations, teams, and communities.

I help yoga teachers become yoga leaders by focusing on industry standards, high-yield teaching strategies, professional growth, brand development, and team building. The goal is not simply to create better classes, but to develop stronger leaders who can create meaningful learning environments for others.
